About the institution

The Los Lagos Regional Library, which forms part of Chile’s National System of Public Libraries, was established in 1994. It replaced an earlier public library that was founded in 1977. Located on the second and third floors of a building on Quillota Street, close to the city center, the Library receives over 100,000 visitors each year. 

Services

The services offered by the Los Lagos Regional Library include:

  • Reading rooms. The Library has over 30,000 books for adults, children and young people, ranging from Chilean and universal literature to reference works and books on different handicrafts. It has a particularly important collection of the work of writers from the Los Lagos Region. Local and national newspapers and magazines are also available in the Library. 
  • Meeting/study rooms. The Library has a number of meeting and study rooms available for use by the community.
  • IT services. Under Chile’s BiblioRedes computer-access program, the Library has an IT laboratory. As well as Internet access, it offers training courses. The Library is also equipped with Wi-Fi. 
  • Guided visits. The Library seeks to foster awareness and use of its services through guided visits. 
  • Educational and cultural activities. The Library implements a range of outreach activities such as workshops and other events. It also has a traveling library that serves rural parts of the Region.
