The first number of Mampato went on sale on 30 October 1968. The magazine, founded and directed by illustrator and painter Eduardo Armstrong, was designed to both educate and entertain the children of Chile.
With its incomparable mixture of stories, science, art, history, games, crafts, music and competitions, Mampato revolutionized the country’s newsstands. And it soon became an icon for an entire generation of readers.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of its launch, the National Library is inviting adults and children to revisit this key part of the country’s graphics heritage in an exhibition entitled “The Mampato Universe”.
The exhibition includes covers of the magazine, illustrations, original drawings, photographs and other documents as well as examples of the work of iconic Chilean illustrators and cartoonists such as Eduardo Armstrong, Óskar Vega, Themo Lobos, Juan Cano, Jorge Pérez Castillo, Luis Ruiz Tagle, Mario Igor, Germán Gabler and Lincoln Fuentes.
In addition, it features contributions from some of the magazine’s different directors including Isabel Allende, Vittorio di Girolamo and Lukas and writers such as Miguel Arteche, Ismael Espinosa and Cecilia Eyzaguirre. Visitors can also enjoy activities for children and talks. Guided visits are available.
