Material or technique:

Opaque blue, red and white satin

Flag raised during the proclamation of Chile’s Independence from the Spanish crown on the morning of 12 February 1818 in Santiago’s Plaza de Armas square. It measures 1.42 x 2.40 meters. On one side, there is a volcano in eruption, with the words “Chile Independiente”, and, on the other, a flagpole from which two national flags fly.

The iconography corresponds to the Patria Nueva period. In 1980, the Revolutionary Movement of the Left (MIR) stole the flag from the National History Museum in protest against the dictatorship but returned it in 2003.
