This portrait of Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme is by the Peruvian painter José Gil de Castro. O’Higgins is wearing the blue sash of the Order of Merit of Chile from the bottom of which hangs the badge of the Order. The Order of Merit also appears on his chest along with decorations corresponding to the Battles of Chacabuco and Maipú. He carries a saber decorated with the emblems of his military rank.
